Abbott Lighthouse Fund

For generations, the sweeping light of the Mark Abbott Lighthouse guided mariners safely home to Santa Cruz.

That tradition was interrupted 15 years ago when the sweeping beam was replaced with a blue/white blinking light. Through the persistent efforts of local boaters and neighbors, the City of Santa Cruz assumed responsibility for the lighthouse and restored its iconic sweeping light. Today, that light has gone dark once again. The manufacturer has discontinued the fixture, replacement parts are no longer available, and the system must now be fully replaced.

Be a Keeper of the Light

A new LED sweeping light has been ordered and is on its way. But replacing the light is only part of the solution. To ensure the Mark Abbott Lighthouse continues to shine for generations to come, a permanent fund is needed—one that will support future maintenance and eventual replacement.

That fund has now been established through the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County. Held in trust, these funds will be used exclusively for the long-term care of the Mark Abbott Lighthouse and its sweeping light.

To honor those who help preserve this beacon, a bronze plaque will be placed on the Lighthouse tower recognizing the “Keepers of the Light.” This is a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the lighthouse by honoring your children, parents, loved ones, or yourself as a Lighthouse Keeper—forever connected to this cherished Santa Cruz landmark.

Contributions of $1,000 or more will be recognized on a Lighthouse plaque.
