Barbara J. Thompson served as a trustee on the Santa Cruz City Schools Board for many years and is a firm supporter of public education and the importance of making educational opportunities available to all students. This scholarship was created in honor of her retirement from the Schools Board in 2002.
In 2008, a one-time scholarship of no less than $500 will be awarded to one student from Santa Cruz, Soquel and Harbor High Schools. Recipients may attend any two–year or four–year college, university, or vocational school.

Jesse Obert (pictured right), a graduate of Santa Cruz High School will attend Boston University and major in Archaeology. (Note: the Foundations received no applications from Harbor High School.)
• Applicant must be a senior of or graduate from Santa Cruz, Soquel or Harbor High Schools, who has lived in Santa Cruz County for three of the past four years; • Has a minimum 3.0 grade point average at the time of graduation; and • Is a U.S. citizen.
The Foundation is no longer accepting scholarship applications for 2008. The Foundation will announce the 2009 scholarship opportunities by January 2009.
The Foundation's scholarships are administered by Scholarship Management Services, a department of Scholarship America. Scholarship America is a national nonprofit educational support and student aid service organization that seeks to expand educational opportunities and encourage educational achievement. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, disability, or national origin.
