Community Advisors Network

Since 2001, the Foundation, through its Planned Giving Center, has sponsored the Community Advisors Network (CAN).

CAN is a 'giving circle' that brings together professional advisors from Santa Cruz County to learn about community needs and to choose local organizations to receive awards from their pooled funds.

Each member of CAN contributes a minimum of $500 to a grantmaking pool, which is then allocated to one or more local organizations after a facilitated proposal review and decision-making process.

In 2006, CAN awarded two grants of $10,000 each to Western Service Workers Association and to Santa Cruz Community Ventures for its ChildCare Ventures Business Alliance Project.

By experiencing the grantmaking process, with like-minded professionals, advisors gain a greater understanding of how they and their clients can take an active role in charitable giving.

"Our financial contributions had a positive impact on the community.  By participating in CAN, I became more aware of the nonprofits in our community and the Foundation's resources available to guide professionals and their clients."

Cristy L. Duggan, CPA and past CAN member
