Celebrating a 96th Birthday with a Gift to the Foundation!

Bernice Caminata decided to do something different this year. She celebrated her 96th birthday by establishing a $100,000 charitable fund at the Foundation in memory of her parents, John and Mollie (Pedemonte) Caminata.

"I feel fortunate to join forces with the Foundation to support worthy causes in a community that has been my home for more than 75 years."

Her father John was chief machinist at the San Francisco Examiner. Upon his retirement in 1934, the family moved to Santa Cruz and settled on a what is now Ocean Street Extension.

In Santa Cruz, Bernice (born in 1913) worked for a time as a bakery clerk.
Later she went to work at the county courthouse, eventually working in the Justice Court for Judge Bill Dean. When Dean went into private practice, Bernice became his legal secretary.

During World War II, Bernice joined the Navy medical corps. As part of her service she attended and graduated from Hunter College in New York. She then served as a pharmacist's mate in Pleasanton, assisting wounded servicemen recuperating from injuries suffered in the South Pacific campaigns.

At the end of the war, she was hired by attorney Emmit Rittenhouse and worked as his secretary for more than forty years, until her retirement in 1986.

Happy Birthday Bernice!
