July 15, 2009 – Fifty-three grants, totaling $745,250, were recently approved by the Foundation's board of directors.
In making these grants, the Foundation drew on its own grantmaking funds (Interest Area and Diversity Partnership Funds), as well as support from its donors and other foundation partners.
Nine donors contributed $157,000 to the grants pool, with additional support coming from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and The California Wellness Foundation. In response to the down economy, priority was given this year to helping local groups maintain safety net services such as food, shelter, health care and other resources required to maintain basic standards of living.
Seventy percent of the grants were made in the areas of Community Development, Health and Human Services. Grants were also awarded in Arts, History and Culture; Education and Youth Development; and the Environment.
