The Louis J. and Mary Ellen Schultz Scholarship

Background

Mary Ellen Schultz was a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz and taught in the Live Oak School District for 32 years. She retired in 1968 and died in 1990. Her husband, Louis, worked at the Opal Cliffs Market for 27 years. They had no children, but wanted to do something for the youth of Santa Cruz County and started this endowed scholarship fund at the Foundation.


Scholarship Opportunity

In 2008, the Foundation will award two scholarships in the amount of $2,500 (renewable for up to three years). These scholarships are offered to students who demonstrate financial need and might not otherwise be able to continue their education.


2008 Louis J. and Mary Ellen Schultz Scholarship Recipients

    

Elle Stricklen, a graduate of Soquel High School will attend the University of San Diego. Devin Murphy (no picture available), is a graduate of Alternative Family Education and will attend the University of California, Berkeley.


Eligibility

• Applicant is a graduate of a high school in the Santa Cruz County;
• Demonstrates financial need; and
• Must enroll as a full-time student at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational school in the fall following graduation.    



Application Process and Deadlines

The Foundation is no longer accepting scholarship applications for 2008. The Foundation will announce the 2009 scholarship opportunities by January 2009.


The Foundation's scholarships are administered by Scholarship Management Services, a department of Scholarship America.  Scholarship America is a national nonprofit educational support and student aid service organization that seeks to expand educational opportunities and encourage educational achievement.  Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, disability, or national origin.
