Responding to the Earthquake in Haiti

March 3, 2010 – The Foundation recommends the best way to help people in Haiti at this time is to make monetary donations to organizations who are experienced in disaster relief and have a presence in the country.

Among the many excellent agencies providing disaster relief or connected to providers are the nonprofit organizations listed below.

If you are interested in donating to a specific, but less well-known relief agency and would like help to ensure its legitimacy or are a Foundation donor and have questions about donating from your fund, please e-mail Robin Larsen or call her at (831) 477-0800 ext. 208.

The agency has pledged an initial $200,000 to assist affected communities and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation. As with most earthquakes, the most immediate needs will be for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

You can also text HAITI to 90999 from your mobile device and a $10 donation to Red Cross relief efforts will be charged to your cell phone bill.

UNICEF's offices in Port-au-Prince were damaged, but staff are ready to deliver disaster relief to the children and families affected by yesterday's earthquake in Haiti. The U.S. Division of UNICEF has issued a statement calling attention to the children affected by this disaster.

As reported on its Web site, the agency has begun to assess needs and damage and to assist children and families affected by the devastating earthquakes. The agency, with offices in Port-au-Prince, is sending teams out by motorbike in Port-au-Prince and is flying in additional staff to help support the emergency response.

The agency estimates that over two million people have been affected by the earthquakes near the Port-au-Prince area, Haiti’s capital city. It has a staff of about 200 people on the ground in Haiti and a team of 15 highly-experienced emergency specialists based in the capital responding with public health, water and sanitation services to prevent the spread of waterborne disease.
