2015-2016 Scholarship Recipients

JULY 31, 2015 - LOCAL STUDENTS GET SCHOLARSHIPS!

Eighteen Santa Cruz County students received a total of $57,500 in scholarships in 2015 to help them pursue higher education.

Jonathan Banuelos

Watsonville High School, $8,000 from the Simunovich Family Agricultural Scholarship Fund. Jonathan plans to attend UC Santa Barbara and major in Agricultural Engineering. He maintained a 3.95 GPA and volunteered at local environmental organizations.


Tryston Cruz

Coast Redwood High School, $1,000 from the Bob and Betsy Darrow Scholarship Fund. Tryston will attend Cabrillo College and major in Environmental Engineering. He wants to help underdeveloped countries have access to energy and resources. Tryston maintained a 4.06 GPA while actively volunteering in the community.



Galen Dailey

Galen DaileyHarbor High School, $2,250 from the Barbara J. Thompson Scholarship Fund. Galen will attend Seattle Pacific University and major in Global Development. He maintained a 4.07 GPA and volunteered at his school and church. Galen will pursue a career in mission work.

Pajaro Valley High School, $8,000 from the
Louis J. and Mary Ellen Schultz Scholarship Fund. Gabriela plans to attend UC Santa Cruz and major in Public Health. She was active in student activities, volunteered at local environment and arts organizations and graduated near the top of her class.



Felicia Davidson

Felicia DavidsonPajaro Valley High School, $8,000 from the Louis J. and Mary Ellen Schultz Scholarship Fund. Felicia will attend UC Santa Cruz to major in Sociology. She was active in student and community youth government. Felicia is passionate about the environment.




Angelina Eggleston

Angelina EgglestonCypress Charter High School, $2,000 from the Matt’s Climb Scholarship Fund. Angelina, a junior at Cypress Charter High School, spent two weeks this summer at Camp Unalayee in the High Sierra, as this year’s Matt’s Climb Scholarship recipient. After high school, Angelina hopes to become a full-time counselor at Camp Hammer while she attends college. 



Nancy Fernandez

Nancy FernandezPajaro Valley High School, $5,000 from the Judy Anton Woman of Valor/Lupita Loves to Read Project. Nancy will attend Stanford University or Williams College and major in Psychology. She was active in clubs and sports. Nancy is determined to be a role model for other Latina students.




Evelyn Gonzalez

Evelyn GonzalezPajaro Valley High School, $1,000 from the Bob and Betsy Darrow Scholarship Fund. Evelyn will attend USC and major in Biology. Despite English being her second language, she earned a 4.20 GPA. Evelyn was active as an athlete, tutor and volunteer. She wants to be a doctor.




Sabrine Griffith

Sabrine GriffithSanta Cruz High School, $4,000 from the R.H. Beel Scholarship Fund. Sabrine will attend UC Berkeley to study Mechanical Engineering. She earned a 4.46 GPA and was captain of the girls’ varsity track and field team while volunteering in the community.




Emily Hill

Harbor High School, $500 from the Dan Wood Scholarship Fund. Emily will attend San Francisco State University to major in International Business. She was a leader academically and in school clubs, and an active community volunteer.


Teagan Knight

Teagan KnightAptos High School, $3,000 from the Emmett and Elsie Geiser Scholarship Fund. Teagan will attend Stanford University and major in International Relations/Political Science. She was active in student government, sports and founded a website.




Evan Milnes

Evan MilnesScotts Valley High School, $1,000 from the Bob and Betsy Darrow Scholarship Fund. Evan will attend Chapman University and major in Biology to pursue interests in marine environment protection. Evan has worked on research projects with the Santa Cruz Long Marine Lab and maintained a 4.14 GPA.




Julissa Ortiz-Delatorre

Pajaro Valley High School, $3,000 from the Emmett and Elsie Geiser Scholarship Fund. Julissa will attend San Francisco State University and major in Kinesiology. Her goal is to become an athletic trainer. She was captain of her cheerleading squad and holds two state weightlifting records.


Michael Threet II

Michael Threet IISoquel High School, $2,250 from the Barbara J. Thompson Scholarship Fund. Michael is off to UC Santa Barbara to earn a degree that will help him give back to Santa Cruz County. Michael was football captain, maintained a 4.28 GPA and awarded the Scholar Athlete award for 4 years.




Julia Vargas

Julia VargasWatsonville High School, $1,000 from the John L. Turner Scholarship Fund. Julia will attend Boston University to major in Biochemistry. She had a 4.18 GPA and was active in student clubs. Julia, who is partially blind, wants to be an ophthalmologist to help others with vision problems.




Maya Wilson-Brown

Maya Wilson BrownAptos High School, $3,000 from the Emmett and Elsie Geiser Scholarship Fund. Maya will attend Duke University and major in Biology. She hopes to receive her doctorate to help make the world a better place. Maya was cheerleading squad captain and graduated near the top of her class.



Rebecca Wood

Rebecca WoodSanta Cruz High School, $2,250 from the Barbara J. Thompson Scholarship Fund. Rebecca will attend Oberlin College and major in Creative Writing. She maintained a 4.3 GPA and volunteered in campus clubs and the community, for which she received the Outstanding Teen Volunteer Award.




Samantha Zevanove

Samantha ZevanoveHarbor High School Graduate, $2,250 from the Barbara J. Thompson Scholarship Fund. Samantha recently graduated with honors from Cabrillo College and will transfer to UC Berkeley in the fall to major in English. She wants to be an English professor.
